ROTILO
A Multiutility Rotimaker
Technically Complex Product
Consumer Product
This project explores designing a technically complex consumer product through thorough design process right from research, ideation to execution.

ROTILO
A multiutility rotimaker
CONTEXT
As a college student living away from home, I can empathize with the longing for homemade food, particularly the delightful taste of freshly served rotis that enhance any meal.
Unfortunately, due to limited cooking skills, lack of access to traditional cooking methods, and time constraints, many haven't been able to experience the satisfaction of preparing these delectable rotis on their own . Consequently leading to food choices often gravitating towards options filled with preservatives or making do with what one can find.
ROTI
Roti/Chapati ( a slight difference) is a common staple in the Indian subcontinent as well as amongst expatriates from the Indian subcontinent throughout the world.
A Round flatbread usually made from wheat flour, which is a valuable source of vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
But what we do have is....
A Rotimaker
A product that has remained virtually unchanged since its initial introduction to the market. In an era where technology evolves at an astonishing pace and consumer demands constantly shift, this stagnant product stands out as a rare anomaly.

Initial Project brief
To design or redesign product by bringing together the aspects of technological complexity and user interaction.

Design Process
Target Users

People living away from their homes

Do not have access to traditional cooking methods and apparatus

Those who are pressed for time

Inexperienced in cooking
Research

Started with using a standard product available in market for research purpose.
and then understanding it in detail.

Secondary research

Primary Research

Identified problems

The slips,
burns
Uneven heating/
cooking
Quality of Rotis
Predominant problem
Temperature range/control
Aesthetics
So what is a good Roti ?

Experimentation
learning by doing

Inference
The current mechanism of compression and simultaneous supply of heat from both sides does not work in best interest of quality of rotis.
Conclusion
Heat is not necessary from top
Puffing contribute to better quality of roti
Rolling method of preparation gives better results than just compression
Redefined brief
To design a multiutility roti maker that is convenient to use without any need of specialized skills, aimed towards people living away from their homes.
